Music was essential to the pattern and texture of Greek life, as it was an important feature of religious festivals, marriage and funeral rites, and banquet gatherings. Our knowledge of ancient Greek music comes from actual fragments of musical scores, literary references, and the remains of musical instruments.

bellkrater - The mythical musician with lyre from Thrace - the myth of Orpheus  Apollo with his Kithara Aulos

In addition to the physical remains of musical instruments in a number of archaeological contexts, depictions of musicians and musical events in vase painting and sculpture provide valuable information about the kinds of instruments that were preferred and how they were actually played. Although the ancient Greeks were familiar with many kinds of instruments, three in particular were favored for composition and performance: the kithara, a plucked string instrument; the lyre, also a string instrument; and the aulos, a double-reed instrument. Most Greek men trained to play an instrument competently, and to sing and perform choral dances. Instrumental music or the singing of a hymn regularly accompanied everyday activities and formal acts of worship. Shepherds piped to their flocks, oarsmen and infantry kept time to music, and women made music at home. The art of singing to one's own stringed accompaniment was highly developed.

Greek philosophers saw a relationship between music and mathematics, envisioning music as a paradigm of harmonious order reflecting the cosmos and the human soul.

    Cave Painting

    What is Prehistoric Art?

The term “prehistoric” indicates that the culture that produced the artwork did not have a written language.  Some of the more famous examples are Stonehenge, the Nasca lines in Peru , and Lascaux Cave .  Prehistoric artifacts and artwork can be found all over the world.

There are several forms of prehistoric artifacts and artwork.  There are small stone figurines (1), petroglyphs (2) found all over the world, geoglyphs (3), megaliths (4), and last but not least, cave paintings (5).

. Stone Figurine - Venus of Willendorf

The Venus of Willendorf is an 11 cm (4.3 in) high statuette of a female figure estimated to have been made between 24,000 and 22,000 BCE. It was discovered in 1908 by archaeologist Josef Szombathy at a paleolithic site near Willendorf, a village in Lower Austria. It is carved from an oolitic limestone that is not local to the area, and tinted with red ochre. The "Venus of Willendorf" is now in the Naturhistorisches Museum in Vienna.

    venus of Willendorf

The purpose of the carving is the subject of much speculation. It never had feet and does not stand on its own. The apparent large size of the breasts and abdomen, and the detail put into the vulva, have led scholars to interpret the figure as a fertility symbol. The figure has no visible face, her head being covered with circular horizontal bands of what might be rows of plaited hair, or a type of headdress. She was thought to be very healthy given her weight and size.

The nickname, urging a comparison to the classical image of "Venus," is now controversial. According to Christopher Witcombe, "the ironic identification of these figurines as 'Venus' pleasantly satisfied certain assumptions at the time about the primitive, about women, and about taste". Catherine McCoid and LeRoy McDermott hypothesize that the figurines may have been created as self-portraits.

    . Lascaux

The cave was discovered on September 12, 1940 by four teenagers.

The cave contains nearly 2,000 figures, which can be grouped into three main categories — animals, human figures and abstract signs. Notably, the paintings contain no images of the surrounding landscape or the vegetation of the time. Most of the major images have been painted onto the walls using mineral pigments, although some designs have also been incised into the stone. Many images are too faint to discern, while others have deteriorated entirely.

  •  The Studio 1987

Long recognized by critics and her peers as one of the most innovative and daring Philadelphia-based artists of the last forty years, Elizabeth Osborne (born 1936) has tirelessly explored the psychologically-charged space between abstraction and realism.

    Potrait of Tony Greenwood 1978

The Color of Light will bring together works from all periods in her career, from a provocative series of 1960s interiors, to innovative land- and seascapes of the 1970s, ambitious large still-lifes of the late 1970s and early 1980s and increasingly abstract work of the past two decades.

    Nightfall 2004

    Blaze 2004

Osborne may be known to some for her virtuoso, glowing realist watercolors of the late 1970s or monumental, hallucinatory landscapes of the early and mid-1970s; still others may know her recent boldly-painted ruminations of nature in its micro- and macrocosm.

    Equinox

"This combination of speed and subdued calm, as the world goes past, creates a kind of transcendental moment."

"These paintings reflect my interest in the way that the road delineates and controls how we experience landscape. From the roadway perspective, we not only travel from point A to B, we see landscape in a varied and complex manner. I use water on the windshield to create a shifting lens for the way we see the environment: it both highlights and obscures our viewing. Perspectives slip and compress, while shapes and colors merge into one another. I also work with relationships between surface and depth, between flatness and illusion. These images are born out of real experience and have a close relationship with the medium of painting: its fluidity, transparency, and capacity for layering, mixing, and blending."

                                                                                                                 —Gregory Thielker

    Morning in the Burned House

    By Margaret Atwood

In the burned house I am eating breakfast.
You understand: there is no house, there is no breakfast,
    yet here I am.

The spoon which was melted scrapes against
the bowl which was melted also.
    No one else is around.

Where have they gone to, brother and sister,
mother and father? Off along the shore,
perhaps. Their clothes are still on the hangers,

their dishes piled beside the sink,
    which is beside the woodstove
with its grate and sooty kettle,

    every detail clear,
    tin cup and rippled mirror.
The day is bright and songless,

the lake is blue, the forest watchful.
In the east a bank of cloud
rises up silently like dark bread.

I can see the swirls in the oilcloth,
I can see the flaws in the glass,
those flares where the sun hits them.

I can't see my own arms and legs
or know if this is a trap or blessing,
finding myself back here, where everything

in this house has long been over,
kettle and mirror, spoon and bowl,
    including my own body,

including the body I had then,
including the body I have now
as I sit at this morning table, alone and happy,

bare child's feet on the scorched floorboards
    (I can almost see)
in my burning clothes, the thin green shorts

    and grubby yellow T-shirt
    holding my cindery, non-existent,
    radiant flesh. Incandescent.

  • Since You've Gone Lyrics

    By Laurel Music

    Sometimes I sit here alone
And sometimes I sit here with you
And sometimes I sit with your ghost

    I'm still holding on
    But my feelings have changed
It all seems deranged that I stuck here
    alone in the dark
    and you carry my heart
    as we're playing our parts
but I have been the exams you got

Sometimes I try not to talk
and sometimes the words come out right
and sometimes I speak like a child

    but I'm still holding on
    but my feelings have changed
It all seems deranged that I'm stuck
    here alone in the dark
and you carry my heart as we're playing our part
but I have been the exams you got

    but my feelings have changed
    it all seems deranged

sometimes i dare to be weak
and sometimes i try to be strong

  • Green Grass Of Tunnel

    By  Múm

    Down from my ceiling
    Drips great noise
It drips on my head through a hole in the roof

    Behind these two hills here
    There's a pool

    And when I'm swimming in
    Through a tunnel
    I shut my eyes
Inside the cabin I make sounds
In through the tubes I send this noise

    Behind these two hills here
    Fall asleep
And when I float in green grass of tunnel
    It flows back

    Down from my ceiling
    Drips great noise

It drips on my head through a hole in the roof

    Behind these two hills here
    There's a pool
    And when I'm swimming in
    Through a tunnel....
    I shut my eyes.

    Lilac Wine

    by Jeff Buckley

I lost myself on a cold damp night
I gave myself in that misty light
Was hypnotized by a strange delight
    Under a lilac tree

I made wine from the lilac tree
Put my heart in its recipe
It makes me see what I want to see
And be what I want to be

When I think more than I want to think
Do things I never should do
I drink much more that I ought to drink
Because it brings me back you

Lilac wine is sweet and heady
    Like my love
    Lilac wine, I feel unsteady
    Like my love

Listen to me, I cannot see clearly
Isn't that she, coming to me
    Nearly here

    tin

Lilac wine is sweet and heady
    Where is my love
    Lilac wine, I feel unsteady
    Where is my love

Listen to me, why is everything so hazy
Isn't that she, or am I just going crazy, dear

Lilac wine, I feel unready for my love
    Feel unready for my love

And if I'd fall, would you pick me up?
If I fall, will you pick me up?

    Balloons

    by Sylvia Plath

Since Christmas they have lived with us ,

    Guileless and clear,

    Oval soul-animals ,

    Taking up half the space,

Moving and rubbing on the silk

    Invisible air drifts,

    Giving a shriek and pop

When attacked, then scooting to rest, barely trembling.

    Yellow cathead, blue fish---

Such queer moons we live with

    Instead of dead furniture!

    Straw mats, white walls

    And these traveling

Globes of thin air, red, green,

    Delighting

The heart like wishes or free

    Peacocks blessing

    Old ground with a feather

    Beaten in starry ls.

    Your small

    Brother is making

His balloon squeak like a cat.

    Seeming to see

A funny pink world he might eat on the other side of it,

    He bites,

    Then sits

    Back, fat jug

Contemplating a world clear as water.

    A red

    Shred in his little fist.

  • Different Seasons

    By Maria Solheim

    Bye
    I'm telling this good-bye
    Bye
    I'm too tired to cry

I know it's only an illusion
They say it's only an illusion
I guess it's only an illusion
They say it's only an illusion

    Try
It's not too late to try
    Try
My fear has got to die

I know it's only an illusion
They say it's only an illusion
I guess it's only an illusion
They say it's only an illusion

    Late At night

    By Maria Solheim

I see people turning off their lights in their houses
    It's late at night
I hear whispers from outside my door

    Gentle feet
    Walking in silence
So i won't wake up from my sleep
    But i hear them anyway

    Late at night

    I remember our sentences
Said and pronounced in all different way
    Melodies inside my head
    Keeping me company

    Gentle feet
    Walking in silence
So i won't wake up from my sleep
    But i hear them anyway

    Late at night

  • Hidden Poetry

    By Maria Solheim

She stole my sentence, stole my pen
I tried my best to get it back again
She hit me hard with a strong hand
I made a grin and left the land

I missed the train, i can't get home
Got no more money on my phone
I sleep outside and here i'll stay
'Cause once i'm here, won't go away

Poetry written so no one can hear
My nervous scream, my endless fear
    My dream

All of my words chosen carefully
Will not stand in the way, will not jump
    In the sea
Where is the hope, where is the truth
My answers are drowned in the name of my youth
I press my nose against the floor
Won't do it again, never done it before
My belly buttons starts to burn
The greatest concern is what i earn

Poetry written so no one can hear
My nervous scream, my endless fear
    My dream

    Shake her hand
    And leave her
Take her tongue and say her words
    Society can't be explained
I'll leave it to the birds

Poetry written so no one can hear
My nervous scream, my endless fear
    My dream

    Too Many Days - [Music]

    Too Many Days

    By Maria Solheim

Too many days I wake up with an aching
Too many days have been wasted like sand
Too many hours have gone by without notice
Too many times i’ve let go of your hand

Lay by the sea, bury all of your fear
    Lady lay
Lay by the sea, you are wild, you are free
You are daughter of mercy, daughter of strength

All of the time I’m reminded of failures
My tongue has bathed in spit from a thief
(I am) dancing as close as I can to desire
(I am) repeating my shortcomings loud to myself

Lay by the sea, bury all of your fear
    Lady lay
Lay by the sea, you are wild, you are free
You are daughter of mercy, daughter of strength

Too many years have been wasted like money
Too many nights I wake up with a cry
Too many years have gone by without notice
Too many times I have wanted to die

Lay by the sea, bury all of your fear
    Lady lay
Lay by the sea, you are wild, you are free
You are daughter of mercy, daughter of strength
